New Job!

Just got hired at Maxis (the Sims, Sim City etc.) as a weird combination illustrator/compositor/UI artist.

I'll continue teaching at Ex'pression, and part timing at INSIGHT, and tutoring on the side. Which means I'm going to be very busy for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully I can still carve time out for the occasional personal painting and figure drawing and plein air sessions.

Prime Character Paintings

http://shop.3dtotal.com/books/3dtotalpublishing/prime-definitive-digital-art-collection.html#t1

I'm honored to have a few of my character paintings in 3D Total's new art book set "Prime". It's available for pre-order now, and you can preview all the pages by clicking on the preview tab and flipping the book open. Definitely the best compilation of contemporary digital art I've ever seen.

Monster Thumbnails

Wanted to keep my concepting skills sharp with a page of thumbnails for a character I'm designing.

Savage Beast

Wanted to paint a gross monster with dramatic portrait lighting. I ended up getting charmed by him half way through and making the piece slightly adorable, but maybe that's just me?

Little Pieces

Little Pieces

Your sugar lips i never bit
are liquid bells fluttering
in this quiet place
smuggled past closed eyes
sighs and goodbyes
where i lay you in grace
embarrassed and steaming
scorched thighs dawning
luscious and fawning
clenched and howling
through shadows shattering
the sublime loneliness of night

until  morning piously unfolds
my smothered refusal
of your absence gaping
bright and sharp
in the silver chill of dawn
where a telephone wire strung with birds
quietly lifts into the half light
when i call out to you in quiet panic
each desperate prayer
a negation of the exhausting farce
we both coolly decline
for the infinite warmth
of our pressed bodies
if not for the delinquency
of your non existence
throughout my days clamoring
vulgar barking
shrewd silences
and ignoble suspicions

that you were the unquestioned calm
after those long bike rides
mouth sticky with stolen loquots
young and small
yet already too big for the world
that unlabored clarity
now fading with mistrust

are you
the remembering what i've always known?
or am i
stumbling into the forgotten conclusion
that you never really existed?
at least not in any practical sense
and really
what sense is that?

hello?
are you sleeping?
i don't want to be a bother-
(the best you ever had)
have you ever belonged so strongly
you knew you could never break
into all those little pieces
worn soft as forgetfulness
that you swore didn't exist
while you picked yourself up
taking far too much time

or was that me?

Bus Stop Girl

A painting I did in college but never gave the same presentational presence as the other pieces in my portfolio, because I was always annoyed by technical problems with it's perspective, proportion, anatomy etc.

My abilities in those regards finally matured enough for me to be able to analyze and fix those issues So here it is re-worked and presented without hesitation.

Though It's been so many years since college, that I now can't help but wince at the indulgent preoccupations this piece clearly gives evidence of my life and sensibilities then. Oh well.

Art Tests!

I've been in talks with a number of different game companies over the last three months about positions ranging from art director, 3D environment artist, concept artist, texture artist etc. My last experience with art tests were years ago, and apparently it's roll in the hiring process is very different now. It seems companies can be a bit more choosy, and administer art tests to multiple candidates at a time, irregardless of experience, portfolio content, etc. Causing a pretty big time sink, wasting lots of artists time.

So below are some of the results to a number of different art tests for various positions at various companies. None of the tests led to me being hired, and you can see that by the last art test I became so disillusioned that I spent two hours on it and it shows. I'm going to focus on updating my reel and portfolio over the next few months and not do any more art tests for the foreseeable future.
